First - Third Grade Ceramic Creatures

In this unit, students explored the theme of “fantasy” through low relief ceramic sculptures. Drawing inspiration from contemporary artists and real animals, students created their own fantasy creatures and imagined how they lived. They learned a variety of ceramic techniques, including pinch and slab building through mini lessons and applied them to their designs.  This lesson explores character design and creativity while relating to real world issues. It encourages students to plan and follow through with a design and respond to their classmates’ work.
