High School Sculpture - Miniatures and Movie Making

In this unit, students explored the theme of “storytelling” through miniatures and movie making. They reflected on how the artistic choices they make throughout the building and filming process impacted how viewers experienced their artwork. Working in groups or on their own, students planned and built miniatures. They documented their work through digital media, including stop motion animation, gifs, and short films, contributing to the mood and meaning of their work. The class drew inspiration from contemporary miniature artists including Frances Lee Glesner and Curtis Tawlst Santiago and from stop motion movies from Laika Studios, to see ways art and science can overlap.
