High School Art 1 - Upcycling with Mixed Media

In this unit, students explored the theme of “consumerism” by transforming second hand objects. The lesson highlights artists like Mary Mattingly whose work considers themes of value and waste. Students gained experience in a variety of artist mediums including linocut printing, painting, and embroidery before selecting the methods to use on their project. Throughout the process, students reflected on their own work and their classmates’ work through group critiques and written reflections.
